Pixies are an American rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1986. The band comprises Black Francis (vocals, guitar), Joey Santiago (guitar), David Lovering (drums), and Paz Lenchantin (bass). Pixies are considered one of the most influential alternative rock bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s. With their loud, aggressive sound and surreal lyrics, Pixies’ music has been cited as a major influence on Nirvana and many other alternative rock acts.
Pixies’ first full-length album, Surfer Rosa, was released in 1988 to critical acclaim. The album is notable for its surreal lyrics and dark, noisy soundscapes. It was followed by 1989’s Doolittle, which was even more successful and remains their most popular album today. Doolittle spawned the hit singles “Here Comes Your Man” and “Monkey Gone To Heaven” and features some of the band’s most beloved songs.
In 1990, the band released Bossanova, a more experimental album that featured a greater emphasis on surf-rock influences. While not as successful as Doolittle, the album still spawned several hits including “Velouria” and “Dig For Fire”. Following this release, the band embarked on a lengthy hiatus which lasted until 2004 when they reunited for a world tour.
Since reuniting, Pixies have continued to tour and record new material. They have released four studio albums since 2004: Indie Cindy (2014), Head Carrier (2016), Beneath the Eyrie (2019), and their latest effort, Beneath the Eyrie Demo Sessions (2020). Pixies have also continued to be an inspiration for many modern alternative bands and remain one of the most influential rock acts of all time.
